Ectogenesis is transforming reproductive rights


Ectogenesis – the growth of mammalian embryos in 

artificial environments – was first described in 1924 by British scientist J.B.S. Haldane. His essay,Daedalus; or, Science and the Future, was regarded as shocking science fiction at the time, but later proved to be remarkable in having predicted many scientific advances. Haldane was a friend of author Aldous Huxley, whose famous novel Brave New World (1932) anticipated similar developments in reproductive technology.


The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is launched


The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is a gravitational wave observatory launched by the European Space Agency.This project is the third of three L-class (Large) missions in the "Cosmic Vision" programme which includes two other spacecraft – the Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer (JUICE) launched in 2022 and the Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics (ATHENA) deployed in 2028.




Distributed propulsion systems are revolutionizing air travel


The basic concept of distributed propulsion is that the thrust-generating components of an aircraft are now fully integrated into the airframe of the vehicle. Instead of one or two large singular engines attached to the outside of the wing or fuselage, thrust is generated by a spanwise distribution of smaller engines or fans across the width of the wing. These are also more seamlessly merged into the body of the plane, offering major advantages in terms of aerodynamics and thrust. This is usually combined with a blended wing body design, creating a more streamlined, synergistic combination of all aircraft components.

  In a recently published paper, researchers show how a transparent layer of nanowire-based electrodes on a polymer surface could be extraordinarily tough and flexible, withstanding repeated scotch tape peeling and bending tests. This could revolutionize and replace conventional touchscreens, according to Yu Zhu, UA assistant professor of polymer science. Currently used coatings made of indium tin oxide (ITO) are more brittle, most likely to shatter, and increasingly costly to manufacture.


FDA approves the first prosthetic arm controlled by muscle electrical signals




After eight years of development, a new hi-tech bionic arm has become the first of its kind to gain regulatory approval for mass production.


Simultaneous control of multiple joints is enabled by miniature motors and a variety of input devices, including wireless signals generated by sensors on the user's feet. Constructed from lightweight but strong materials, the battery-powered arm system is of similar size and weight to a real limb and has six user-selectable grips.
